Make sure you copy and paste the registration code EXACTLY from the email that Kagi sent you. There should not be any spaces before, after, or inside the registration code. If you still cant get it to work, contact me at the email address at the end of this document.
How do I upgrade from a previous version of DVD Database X?
FIRST, PLEASE MAKE A BACKUP COPY OF YOUR DVD Data FOLDER. This folder contains all of the information in your DVD database, as well as all of the associated cover images. This folder can be found in the same directory where DVD Database X is currently installed.
To upgrade your version of DVD Database X, simply drag and drop the newly downloaded Application Icon (fancy silver and blue thing) into the location where you currently have DVD Database X installed.
Do not move or replace your existing DVD Data folder - this is where all of the information that you already have entered is stored, along with all of your images that have been downloaded from IMDB. If you've already done a lot of work entering movies, it might even be a good idea to make a second backup copy of this folder.
How can I tell what version of DVD Database X I have?
With the application running, click the DVD Database X menu, and select About DVD Database X. The full version number is listed in the About box.
Id like to keep my DVD Data separate from my applications. How can I do this?
Easy, just move the DVD Data folder where ever you prefer, and create an alias (Command-L from the Finder) to the folder. Drop the alias in the same directory as the DVD Database X application, and rename it to DVD Data.
After performing your upgrade instructions, I launch the new application and all my movies are gone. What happened?
Make sure you replace the DVD Data folder with a copy of your backed up DVD Data folder. A blank DVD Database file is 44KB, and the images folder inside it will be empty. A DVD Database file that has movies in it will be larger than 44KB, and its associated images folder will have jpeg files inside of it.
Is there any way I can have more than one database?
Yes, but you must copy the entire DVD Database X folder, application and all. Each DVD Data folder needs to have its own copy of the DVD Database X application in its directory.
How does your version numbering system work?
I consider the first number to correspond to a code base. The second number denotes a major revision to this code base, with additional features and functionality. The third number is for minor bug fixes and enhancements.
I automatically add you to my mailing list when you purchase DVD Database X, and Ill send you an email when a new major revision is available. If I discover a bug, Ill usually release a minor revision, but I typically wont notify the list unless the bug can cause data loss.
I like your program, but its missing a field for ______. Can you add that in the next release?
Click the Edit menu > Custom Database Fields, and type in the name of the field youd like to add to your database. Now, whenever you edit or add a movie manually, your new field will appear at the bottom on the window.
The movie list is too wide. I hate using the horizontal scroll bar. What can I do to fix this?
Three things: You can make the window larger, Resize the columns by dragging the edges of the column headings, or unchecking the fields youd like to hide from DVD Database X menu > Preferences > Display. Usually a combination of these methods will give you a nice looking movie list.
How do I select more than one movie at a time, to loan, edit or delete them at once?
Hold down the Apple Key when clicking to select non-adjacent movies. Hold down the shift key while clicking to select movies between two points.
Is there a version of DVD Database X for Windows?
Not at the moment. DVD Database X uses AppleScript technology for playing VIDEO_TS folders and trailers. Its probably possible to replicate this on Windows, but I dont have a machine to test on.
Check out http://www.movietrack.net for a free Windows Movie Database program. It has many of the same features as DVD Database X, and its FREE!
Is there any way to include full-sized cover art?
Full-sized cover art is difficult to come by legally, due to copyright restrictions. Thumbnail images are widely available from both IMDB.com and Amazon.com.
Sometimes the IMDB cover art is wrong. Cant anything be done about this?
Sure. Find your DVD on Amazon, and drag and drop the cover image from your web browser into any image area in DVD Database X. The image will be added to your movie record.
When I design a template using the Template Editor, how do I prevent the fields from overlapping?
Make sure you check the Wrap field at XXX pixels option. For a field thats already in the layout, Control-Click on the field, check the Wrap field checkbox, and save. The field will be lengthened to your specification, so you can see where it will wrap to the next line.
